Making mono recordings sound better

Selecting only the centre channel allows Mono-a-Mono to remove almost all the hiss and crackle associated with vintage mono recordings, as long as they have been reproduced and digitised in stereo. In this mode, it acts as a powerful "mono enhancer" which separates the noise from the signal, and outputs only the (mono) signal corresponding to the original recording.

Most old recordings, even when reproduced with modern stereo equipment, exhibit high levels of noise. This noise is mostly introduced during playback, and the noise components in left and right channels are largely unrelated. Thus the left-only or right-only channels contain the bulk of the noise, while the centre channel contains the bulk of the original signal.

So to enhance the quality of mono recordings, Mono-a-Mono should be configured simply to output the centre channel and discard the others.
