When configured to produce all three “Output Signals”, Mono-a-Mono acts as a "de-mixer", allowing the recording to be re-mastered without access to original master tapes.
The three channels can be processed independently (using third-party software) to change the tonal balance, dynamic range, or position of the respective sources within the sound stage.
The only caveat is that the third-party software should be able to handle 3-channel stereo files correctly. Many do not. The open source sound editor, Audacity, is to be commended here – it’s available on a number of platforms, handles multichannel audio files correctly, analyses spectral content of arbitrary-duration signals, and plots nice grey-scale spectrograms. It’s a powerful tool and it’s well worth putting up with its idiosyncrasies.
